What do you need to know?

  • $50 for visitors under 12 years old
  • $100 for visitors over 12 years old
  • $25 for visitors from the Andean Community and Mercosur under 12 years old

You will pay this fee upon arrival at the airport in Baltra or San Cristobal. CASH only.

From August 1, 2024, the entry fee will be:

  • $100 for visitors under 12 years old
  • $200 for visitors over 12 years old
  • $50 for visitors from the Andean Community and Mercosur under 12 years old
  • $100 for visitors from the Andean Community and Mercosur over 12 years old

Any time of the year is perfect! There’s always action happening on the Islands!

  • December to May is the hot & rainy season. It rains mainly in the Highlands while the skies are clear by the seashore.
    Air temperature is from 24°C/ 75°F to 31°C/ 88°F
    Water temperature is from 23°C/73°F to 25°C/ 77°F.
  • June to November is the cool & dry season. Skies can be cloudy and it usually drizzles early morning and late in the afternoon. It can be windy and the seas will be rough.
    Air temperature is from 18°C/ 64°F to 26°C/ 79°F
    Water temperature is from 20°C/ 68°F to 22°C/ 72°F

Carnival holidays, Easter week, June, July & August, 1-5 of November, mid-December to mid-January.

September and October.

  1. The time, it’s an hour earlier in the Galapagos than in mainland Ecuador.
  2. The tap water is not drinkable!!!
  3. The language, although Galapagos depends on tourism, not many people are fluent in English. A translator is always handy.
  4. The currency, Ecuador’s currency is the US Dollar since 1.999, there are no exchange facilities on the islands.
  5. The ATMs, depending on the bank, the maximum daily withdraw is from $200 to $300 each time and $600 per day. There is no ATM on Floreana. Isabela Island’s ATM belongs to Banco del Pacífico.
  6. The payments, few hotels, restaurants, and stores take cards and they don’t accept big notes with a happy smile, so bring change.
  7. Be prepared, most beaches don’t have toilets, dressers, and trash cans to preserve the natural landscape of the islands. 
  8. The sun is super strong on the equator, you’re not going to get tanned but terribly sunburnt. Protect your skin!
  9. The internet service is slow and intermittent. Cellphone data is more reliable. Get an Ecuadorian SIM card upon arrival at the airport in Quito or Guayaquil if you really need to have access to the internet.

     TIP: Big stores and restaurants usually have decent WiFi.

  • Roundtrip flights are from $250 to $600. 
  • The INGALA Transit Control Card is $20 pp. Get it at the airport in Quito or Guayaquil before checking in for your flight to the islands. You must keep your TCC until you leave the islands.
  • The Galapagos National Park Entry Fee is from $50 to $100.
  • The Baltra airport bus service is $5 each way & the ferry to cross the Itabaca Channel is $1.
  • The inter-island ferries are $35 to $40 plus the water taxi fares, in Santa Cruz and San Cristobal $0.5 and $1 in Isabela, additionally the pier tax is $1 per person. This is paid in cash.

TIP: If you’re prone to get seasick take medicine before this ride and sit at the back, keep in mind that you could get wet there. Wear earplugs to reduce the noise.

  • The inter-island flights are from $150 to $275.
  • The Isabela Island Entry Fee is from $5 to $10.
  • Accommodation can range from $25 pp to more than $100.  
  • Meals are from $5 to $40.
  • Day Tours will be from $45 to $450 pp.
  • Cruises can be found from $1.100 to more than $6.000 pp.
  • Taxi rides in town on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal are $1.50 – flat rate. On Isabela the cost is $1 per person.
  • Hiring a taxi for the day is from $70 to $120.
  • Bikes can be rented for $15 to $25 per day.

Due to COVID-19 many tourists are booking last-minute to avoid loosing precious deposits when they need to cancel their trip as a consequence of new travel restrictions. However, if there is a tour you really want to take, try to book it ahead of time to secure its operation on your available dates. Many boats need a minimum number of passengers to confirm the operation, but with last-minute bookings, the operation cannot be guaranteed. Also, consider booking in advance if you:

  • Have limited time for your visit – 4 to 7 days.
  • Are traveling with a large group, 4 or more people.
  • Need professional advice from a destination expert.
  • Wish to have smooth & stress-free vacations.
  • Expect guaranteed service and support.
  • And, don’t want to waste golden vacation time looking for last-minute cheap unsafe tours, cruises or accommodation in random unknown agencies.

TIP: Book all your tours first and then your hotels.

  • From June to November the cold currents of Humboldt bring abundant plankton to the archipelago and all the marine life blooms! 
  • Visibility is 10-20 m.
  • The winds make bumpy seas.

Galapagos National Park Rules

1. Keep 2m distance from animals, including your camera! 2. Do not touch or feed the fauna. 3. Do not alter the ecosystem. Do not take elements from it, do not introduce alien elements and do not write on rock or whatsoever. 4. Do not smoke, drink alcohol or make campfires. 5. Walk on the marked trails only. 6. Take pictures without flash. Commercial photography and the use of drones need authorization from the NP. 7. Camping is allowed in designated areas. Request permission from the NP 48h before. On Santa Cruz at Garrapatero Beach, on Isabela at the Sulfur Mines & Volcan Chico, on San Cristobal at Puerto Chino, Manglecito & Puerto Grande. 8. Use authorized tourist services & fishing boats. 9. Water sports with motorized watercrafts and air tourism are prohibited. 10. Visit the protected areas with a specialized guide. THINK GREEN: REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE, & REJECT.

What to pack?

  • Fresh long sleeve shirts, pants, shorts, sunglasses, hat and/or cap. The sun is very strong on the equator, you’re not going to get tanned but terribly sunburnt. Protect your skin!!!
  • Comfy shoes will take you further during your long exploring tours. Water shoes would be good to bring as well.
  • A very good camera (waterproof if possible), chargers and US SOCKET ADAPTERS!
  • Environmentally friendly toiletries, insect repellent and SUNSCREEN.
  • Rash guards for swimming.These will protect you from the sun and keep you warm.
  • Avoid plastic bags/bottles, bring reusable bags/bottles instead.
  • Do not carry any organic non-processed food in either your checked or carry-on luggage when taking your flight to the islands or inter-island ferry or flight.
  • Fast dry towels come in handy for day trips.
  • A rain jacket if you’re coming during the cool season. It usually drizzles in the morning and late in the afternoon.
  • More sunscreen than you think you might need.

TIP: Laundry services are available for $1 to $2 per kilo. Ready to be picked up the same day in most cases.

  • Several memory cards for your camera.
  • Aloe Vera for sunburns.
  • Your own snorkeling gear or you can rent it in town for $3 to $5 per day.
  • Your own long wetsuit if you’re coming during the cool season, or you can rent one in town for $5 to $10 per day. 

Tips and more

  • Two airlines operate this route from Quito and Guayaquil: LATAM & Avianca.
  • Travel time from Quito is 2.5 hrs. approx. and from Guayaquil is 2 hrs. approx.

    Make sure you pay the foreigners’ fare as you could be surprised with an extra charge of around $150 at check-in if you buy a ticket as an Ecuadorian resident. Usually, the fares that include at least 1 checked luggage of 23kg are for foreigners.

    TIP: You can arrive in San Cristobal Airport and depart from Baltra Airport or vice-verse to maximize your time on the islands, and to avoid one inter-island flight or ferry.  

  1. After claiming your luggage and clearing inspections, take the airport bus ($5) to the Itabaca Channel that separates Baltra Island from Santa Cruz Island.
  2. At the Itabaca Channel there is a ferry ($1) to carry you across.
  3. The Puerto Ayora bus runs to town ($5) once it’s full and takes 45 minutes to one hour. 
  4. Taxi service is for a maximum of 4 people ($25-$30) and takes 35 minutes approx. TIP: Take advantage of this taxi ride and optimize your time on the islands by stopping at the Twin Craters (Free admission), one of the Giant Tortoises Reserves & Lava Tubes ($5 pp Entry Fee).   1. After claiming your luggage and clearing inspections, you can grab a taxi ($1.50 to $2) to your hotel in town, or 
  2. Walk there! The airport is just 15 minutes away from town.

1. The costs, most tour operators charge the full fare for children older than 3 since they are counted as one passenger, and the number of passengers per boat is strictly regulated by the National Park.

TIP: Discount on inter-island ferries is possible.
